Thorongil: Young Adulthood
Even far back in Aragorn's youth the threat of Mordor was growing. As Aragorn wandered throughout Middle Earth for thirty years he helped many people and nations, namely Gonder and Rohan. He met the Grey Pilgrim, Olorin, also called Gandalf, and learned much from him. He was the best captain of Ecthelion II, son of Turgon, Steward of Gondor. In that city he went under the name Thorongil, which means "Eagle of the Star". His eyes were very keen and he was very wise, counseling the king that the strength of rebels in Umbar was a threat that must be taken care of. So soon he gathered a small fleet and burned many of the ships of Umbar in the dead of night. He overthrew the captain and returned with only a few losses. However, even though a great celebration was being held in Minas Tirith for his great victory, he refused saying he had other business. Afterwards Denethor became the new steward. Although Thorongil had told Ecthelion not to trust in Saruman but rather in Gandalf, Denethor was wary of Gandalf and did not heed Thorongil's advice. He was jealous of Thorongil, for he suspected the worst: That Thorongil was in fact Aragorn, heir of Isildur, and that Gandalf and Aragorn meant to usurp him.
