Estel: Early Childhood
Aragorn's father's name was Arathorn. Arathorn wanted to marry Gilraen, but her father Dirhael forbade this using the excuse that Gilraen was too young for marriage. His wife, Ivorwen, however, was smarter and knew that horrible days were coming and that there was not much time. And she turned out right. The very year that Gilraen and Arathorn were married Arathorn's father, Arador, was killed by trolls north of Rivendell. And so Arathorn had to take up the leadership of his father and become the Chieftain of the Dunedain.
But all was not well. Two years later Arathorn also was killed (do all the dunedain have bad luck or what?) while fighting orcs with the sons of Elrond. He was pierced in the eye (ouch)! Luckily hope remained alive in the body, name, and promise of his son, Aragorn. Elrond became Aragorn's new father and he grew up in Rivendell. His true identity as the Heir of Isildur was concealed from him and he was instead given the first of many names-Estel, which means "hope". (Enemies even then were beginning to come forth and Aragorn was not safe.) This name he kept until Elrond told him of his true lineage when he was twenty. He was then given the ring of Barahir and the shards of Narsil, and began his life as a wandering dunedain.
